I’m confused by the first pic. Getting a GAZ Chaika running after 30 years in Practical Classics magazine/TV show? How is this car remotely considered a practical classic? Even if you lived in Russia getting parts for this rusting hulk would be a nightmare. Is this even a classic or just a Buick knock off?

Well if a pokey magazine can get it running hundreds of miles from anywhere approaching parts availability then I’d say it’s practical :)

They were influenced heavily by Americana at the time so it's probably got a good deal of Buick in the styling, but the styling's the only thing. Had a 5.5l all alloy V8. Check out the later ZILs for what's essentially an all-alloy big-block. One of those in a Volga would give any Nova a run for it's money :)

What I love is how alternate-universy they are. It’s like they’re ported over from a world where the Empire State was actually used to moor Zeppelins. They’re brilliant :)

Not really sure why the Volga took the grill profile and headlight surrounds of a ‘62 Falcon and stuck them on the shape of a ‘65 Opel Kadett in ‘66, for production in ‘70, but I suppose it worked.

Huh, you're right. Definitely worked though :) I'd love a Volga Chaser personally...
